The Starter Pack

Tell stories people remember.
No script required.

You don't need a fake content persona. You need a true story, a clear point, and a message your audience can repeat. Use this free starter pack to find one real story — it's probably sitting on your shelf right now — and turn it into content that builds trust.

Why no script?

A scripted story sounds like a script. A remembered story sounds like the truth — because it is. If you remember it, it's for a reason. Your memory already did the editing; your job is to peel back the layers, not to write new ones.

One more truth: a story only works when it knows who it's for. Before you polish the words, get clear on three things: who are you helping? What are they stuck in? What promise are you moving them toward?

That's the heart of my Six Second Pitch: Person, Problem, Promise. Once those are clear, your story has a job. Don't know yours yet? My free Six Second Pitch analyzer will show you — but you don't have to wait. Start telling true stories today and sharpen the aim as you go.

The 6P Story Engine

Every strong business needs more than one story. You need a story that explains who you serve, what you stand against, what changed you, why your offer matters, how your process works, and how you protect the people who trust you — one for each of the six P's of my Grounded Growth system.

Origin

Person

Where you came from, who shaped you, and why you care about this person. It earns the right to be heard.

Outlaw

Problem

The story that names the broken way things are done — and shows what you refuse to repeat.

Phoenix

Promise

The rebirth story. What broke, what changed, and what transformation you now help others reach.

Gladiator

Product

The story of your offer in the arena. What it fights, who it protects, and why it deserves to exist.

Artisan

Process

The craft story. The repeatable care, method, and standard behind the result.

Champion

Protection

The guardian story. How you protect your customer's trust, time, money, data, dignity, and peace.

Which one first? Start at the foundation. Origin, Outlaw, and Phoenix carry your Person, Problem, and Promise — the grounded layer everything else is built on.

Find your story object

This is my No-Script method — simple on purpose. No memorizing, no formula. The fastest way into a true story is an object you've kept.

  1. Pick the object

Pick an object you've kept longer than logic can explain. Maybe it moved house to house with you, lived in a drawer, or survived every declutter — my rule of thumb is kept through at least 3 moves. If its value to you is higher than the price to replace it, there's a story inside it.

  2. Pick the story that stands out

Don't force it. Take the story your mind goes to first. If you remember it, it's for a reason — trust that.

  3. Peel back the details

Who, what, when, where, why, how. Get specific: not "a while back" but "the summer I turned six." Specifics are what make a story feel true to the listener.

  4. Bring back the senses

What did you see, think, and feel in that moment? What did you hear, smell, taste, touch? You're not describing the object — you're putting the listener inside the memory.

  5. Ask the 5 whys

Why is this important? Why did you keep it? Now peel the layers: why is that important? Why did that matter? Keep asking why until you hit something that surprises you. That's the real story — usually about five layers down.

  6. Turn it toward your audience

Tell an I-focused story with a YOU-focused message. What does this story teach them — about mindset, about approach, about something they can think through for themselves?

If the story only makes people admire you, it isn't finished. If it helps them see themselves, it's ready.

Pro tip — from a Brand Builders Group coach: if no object jumps out, list your firsts. First car. First concert. First job. First boyfriend or girlfriend. First big game. Firsts (and lasts, bests, and worsts) are where memorable stories hide — it's one of many story-finding tools they teach. More on Brand Builders Group here →

Shape it so it lands

Once you've found the story, give it the shape every great story climbs:

SCENE STRUGGLE SUMMIT LESSON

Scene — set it with all five senses and characters we can love. Struggle — what went wrong, what it cost. Summit — the moment everything turns. Lesson — land on one clear point your audience can use.

One rule above all: if a story is heartbreaking but not helpful, rewrite it. Take people through the pain to the lesson, and end in hope.

Watch it work — object: an old notebook.

Scene: I found the notebook where I wrote my very first offer.

Struggle: Ideas on every page — and no clear promise on any of them.

Summit: I realized the problem was never effort. It was clarity.

Lesson: Your story doesn't need more drama. It needs one clear point.
